A report that emerged claimed that the ongoing rape trial of Bishop Bafana Stephen Zondo saw a gospel artist testifying against the suspect. It was claimed that the gospel artist allegedly got raped in 2008 , afterwhich she was offered R75 000 for her silence.
In accordance with the report, the alleged rape of the gospel artist took place in 2008 , with the Formula 1 Hotel being the crime scene. It also emerged that the testimony took place behind closed doors at the High Court .Lumka Mahanjana , who is the spokesperson for the Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority confirmed that media was not allowed to cover the proceedings.
What happened after the alleged rape ?
The alleged rape victim who reportedly released her CD in 2012 claimed that she was offered R75 000 for her to be silent about the alleged abuse. However , it was claimed that she refused to take the money that was allegedly offered to her .The alleged victim went on and reportedly said that she spoke about the rape incident in 2012 during a radio interview .
Although three out of 26 people have reportedly taken the stand and testified against Bishop Zondo , the accused has denied all the allegations. There are ten charges including rape and sexual misconduct against some members of his church, which have been denied by the Bishop.
Although one is presumed innocent until proven guilty , this is not the first time to have a religious leader charged with similar misconducts .There is Prophet Shepherd Bushiri as well who trended a few months ago for similar charges.
Although religious leaders are supposed to guide their followers in the right direction, it can be noted that there are some who abuse their powers to fulfill their selfish desires. Community members should therefore be vigilant when it comes to trusting their religious leaders and not be taken advantage of .
