Top coronavirus adviser Salim Abdool Karim to be succeeded by Koleka Mlisana


Health minister Zweli Mkhize’s top coronavirus adviser, Salim Abdool Karim, has stepped down, saying he needs to devote his attention to his academic commitments and HIV research.

Karim is an internationally respected scientist who heads the Centre for the Aids Programme of Research in SA at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he also holds the position of pro-vice-chancellor for research. He also holds positions at the universities of Columbia, Cornell and Harvard..

Disease transmission specialist Prof Salim Abdool Karim has reported that he will be getting back to his scholastic responsibilities after his term as co-seat of the Coronavirus advisory council (MAC) reaches a conclusion. 


"It has been a solitary honor to serve on the Macintosh close by outstanding partners. After precisely 1 year, the opportunity has arrived for me to get back to my scholastic responsibilities. As I leave to pull together on HIV research, I realize beyond any doubt that guidance on our Coronavirus reaction is in safe hands," Karim said. 


"From April I will be re-zeroing in on my HIV research, particularly on extensively killing antibodies for HIV counteraction which is at a basic stage yet have eased back as I have not had the option to give time and exertion to it," he said.
