South Africa records 54 452 deaths and 1584 961 positive cases

In the last reporting circle, South Africa recorded 896 new cases taking the total number of cases identified so far to 1584 961. The number of deaths that have been recorded in the last 24 hours is 35, taking the death toll to 54 452. KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest number of deaths standing at 16, followed by Gauteng with 7 deaths. Eastern Cape and Northern Cape both recorded 2 deaths. Mpumalanga and Western Cape recorded just one death each in the last 24 hours. North West and Limpopo recorded no death.

These numbers comes as South Africans became aware of the fact that, there is a person who travelled from India to South Africa and, has tested positive Covid-19. However the minister of health Zweli Mkhize has called for calm amongst citizens as the variant found in India has not been detected in South Africa yet.

People who are over the age of 60 have been adviced to register so that they can be vaccinated when the second phase of vaccination start in mid May.
