Vaccination teams ATTACKED in JHB and TSHWANE

The Gauteng Health Department has condemned recent attacks on vaccination teams. In the latest incident, five armed men attacked and robbed healthcare workers at gunpoint in Pretoria on Saturday night at a drive-by vaccination site in Soshanguve.

It was reported that the five armed men were in a white Toyota Quantum at Wonder City Taxi Rank in Soshanguve robbed the vaccination team and fled with vaccination program gadgets which consist of six cellphones, three tablets, and one smart phone which belongs to the team.

This is the latest attack on vaccines sites in a series of recent assaults, just last week robbers hijacked a vehicle in the West Rand of Johannesburg carrying COVID-19 mobile site equipment.

The Gauteng Health Department has released a statement stating "Our healthcare workers remain the backbone of the health system, even during the pandemic as they continue to play an important role in terms of vaccination program rollout. We, therefore, call on all members of the public to work with law enforcement agencies and to share any information they might have on the two incidents.

The Department says that the crimes against vaccination teams come at a vital point in the fight against the pandemic, particularly when the province is stepping up its vaccination drive, amid the fourth wave.
