Substance abuse is an enormous social problem in South Africa, however, in this article we will mainly focus on the Townships. Readers are, however, reminded that, this does not necessarily mean the drug and alcohol abuse occur only in the Townships. Marijuana, Cocaine, Tik and heroine are some of the most frequently used substances in South Africa.

Alcohol abuse is essentially defined as drinking two much.

Drug abuse is when one use legal or illegal substances in ways they shouldn't.

In South Africa, particularly in the Townships, there are many contradictions that majority of the people have to face on daily basis. And those contradictions are:

> South Africa is well endowed with mineral resources, however, majority of the people are living below the poverty line

> South Africa is considered to be one of the unequal country in the world, despite having all the mineral resources

> South African unemployment statistics are very bad. And people who reside in the Townships are most affected

Coping with Contradictions:

There are a number of means by which we seek to resolve certain contradictions in our lives. We may excuse them by saying that the circumstances which have determined our lives, particularly the failures in our lives, are beyond our control. That it is other peoples who are totally responsible for the situation we are in, and therefore we have no control over it.

In pyschology there's what is called Good coping mechanism and Bad coping mechanism. And generally, drinking alcohol and or taking of drugs is regarded as bad coping mechanism. In recent years, we have read and seen how some people in the Townships resort to the use of Alcohol to deal with contradictions in their.

The Geophysics of the Townships

By now everyone is familiar with the geophysics of the Townships. The catalog of garbage - filled streets, run down and shuttered stores and burn-out and abandoned cars and buildings, crumbling apartment houses, deteriorating real estate, rats, roaches, files, stale smells etc are well known by Township dwellers and non Township dwellers alike.

The overcrowdedness on the streets and in the houses, lack of water and lack of physical services and upkeep, the general decay of all things physical have been articulated many times. This is the geophysical situation of the Townships, the abundance of all that is rottening, decaying, overused, overcrowded, out moded and sparsity of all that is needed, but unavailable; the over abundance of health damaging conditions and the absence of wholesome, preventative conditions.

From the forgoing one can see that the township geophysical environment is a disinvested one - one where all valuable physical resources are deteriorating.

Here is why there's rise in drug and alcohol abuse in the Townships:

The Economic picture of the Township is as well known as is the geophysics. Unemployment and underemployment abound abound and are getting worse. More families life below the poverty line. The lack of investment, the outflow of capital, the lack of extension credit and cash serves to establish an economic environment that is tenous, unpredictable, poverty stricken, life destroying.

Some people in the Townships resort to deal with all these problems by abusing drugs and alcohol. Hence there's rise in drug and alcohol abuse in the Townships.
