WATCH OUT| for family meeting. opinion.

South Africa, brace yourselves for a family meeting!

President Cyril Ramaphosa will convene the national coronavirus command council on Sunday, 28 November 2021, to assess developments in the pandemic.

In a statement released on Friday, 26 November 2021, Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele said Ramaphosa would also be getting scientific updates around the newly detected variant, B.1.1.529.

Gungubele said the detection of a new variant by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases demonstrated South Africa's constant vigilance and scientific capability in the management of Covid-19.

"The Institute is in intensive engagement with all established surveillance systems to understand the new variant, and what the potential implications could be. While this work continues, South Africans must take all measures to protect themselves against coronavirus, beginning with vaccination". Gungubele said.

He added that people should continue wearing face masks, frequently washing or sanitizing their hands and keeping a social distance to slow the spread of infection. The virus has not been eradicated, and vaccination protects us from serious illness, hospitalization or death.

"Vaccination is free to all people living in South Africa, and anyone aged 12 years and older is encouraged to vaccinate".
