Endometriosis and Fertility

Endometriosis is a disorder that affects the endometrium (the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus).

Symptoms of Endometriosis

Because it affects the female reproductive system, most of the symptoms are visible during periods. They are:

Severe period cramps and lower back pain.

Vaginal bleeding.

Constipation or nausea during periods.

Painful intercourse.

Irregular cycle (heavy bleeding on one month and light bleeding the next).

However, the one symptom of endometriosis that stands out the most is infertility. Some women who suffer from endo have a difficult time conceiving, while others are unable to conceive at all. This is called Severe Endometriosis.

What are the causes?

Distorted anatomy of the pelvis

Scarred fallopian tubes

Changes of the hormonal environment of the eggs.

Endometriosis Treatment

Excision surgery. This means that the endometrium may be removed through surgery.

Hormone medication may be prescribed.

Heating pads may lessen the pain during periods.

Conception After Surgery

It is possible to conceive after surgery, however, after 6 to 12 months of being unable to conceive, the woman is advised to look into other methods of having children; such as surrogacy.
