Almost 2 months have passed since the ANC revealed to the public that one of their integral member of the party's top was struck by bout of sickness, and was tactically withdrawing from their day to day responsibilities, it seems the situation has not changed, with the party providing an update.
Around November, the ANC confirmed that deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte had been given the green light to take a sick leave after her health suddenly deteriorated. Although the type of her malady was not divulged to the public, there was a sense in which she could have been seriously afflicted.
Meanwhile, after many moons, the party has provided not so much of an update but reiterated their solidarity with her and her family at this challenging time.
In a statement to confirm the upcoming National Working Committee Lekgotla, the ANC indicated that Duarte's medical team has advised her to only allow access to her immediate family members.
And with this significantly showing the serious nature of the situation, the ANC has assigned Treasurer General Paul Mashatile to assist Duarte on the duties regarding the secretary-general's office.
Duarte herself was playing the role of an acting Secretary-General after the ANC suspended Ace Magashule in line with the party's much-publicised step aside resolution.
The NWC meeting is expected to get preparations for the upcoming NEC meeting at the weekend, in which issues such as the country's economy, defending the gains which the constitution has made among others will form part of the agenda.
The NEC Lekgotla will come at a time the factional differences in the ANC have come to the fore, this is after NEC member Lindiwe Sisulu sparked off a debate regarding what she describes as the failures of the constitution and the judiciary to advances the courses of black people.
Quite ironically but interesting is the fact that her public debate with fellow cabinet member, Ronald Lamola, is now likely to be part of agenda. Lamola did not hold back when he launched a blistering missive in retort to what Sisulu had said in her article prior. The two will have to work hand in glove as members of the NWC to prepare for what would be a tense NEC meeting.
Duarte is expected to retire from politics at the end of her term in December after she intimated her desire to allow the new generation to take over.
She would have served a full 10 years in the position as deputy secretary-general after serving as Gwede Mantashe's deputy after the Mangaung conference in 2012.
The OnlineNewzBible team wishes Duarte a speedy recovery.
