Controversial Qedani Mahlangu makes a sh0cking comeback

The spotlight is once again on former Gauteng MEC for health Qedani Mahlangu.

She is set to clear her name at the ongoing Life Esidimeni inquest.

The inquest aims to find if anyone can be held criminally liable for the deaths of 144 mental healthcare patients who died from neglect in 2016.

“Miss Mahlangu will testify that she only became aware of the shortcomings after mental healthcare users started to pass away. She was not aware that you were not carrying out your duties diligently,” said Govender.

“The MEC will testify that she had no role in this regard and that these issues where not brought to her attention by Dr Makgabo Manamela,” said Govender. Manamela is former director of mental health.

Jacobus, who was testifying at the inquest, said she did not carry out her duties properly when auditing NGOs for the marathon project.

“I did not carry out my duties diligently,” she said.

Jacobus said the process was rushed by Dr Manamela who told her it is extraordinary circumstances despite Jacobus having misgivings.

She said she cannot be sure that Mahlangu was told about the lack of readiness of NGOs.

“According to my knowledge the person who receives the documentation is Dr Manamela and she takes it further to higher level,” said Jacobus.

Govender said if Jacobus had escalated her issues to Mahlangu then things may have changed.

“You say you assumed that things were escalated to the top. That is an assumption,” said Govender.

Jacobus said despite her misgivings she did not complain to Mahlangu personally about the rushed process because it was not protocol.
