Ever since the whole world started manufacturing vaccines for the coronavirus, many countries have been getting vaccines that are very effective at fighting the variants of the coronavirus they have in their respectable countries. The issue continues to be that when these vaccines reach the country of South Africa, they become less effective due to the powerful strain of the coronavirus South Africans has. This could be seen by the two vaccines already procured in the country.

The vaccine from India has been extremely effective against the viriant found in India, but when it got to South Africa, it turned out that its efficacy against the South African variation of the coronavirus dropped to only 22%. This rendered the vaccine useless for its main functions. The next vaccine that was received was the Johnson and Johnson one. This one had a higher efficacy compared to the one from India which is 57% but it is still a reduction compared to how effective it is in other countries.

Now the biggest brand of vaccine manufacturing Pfizer, that has proved to have one of the highest efficacies against the virus in most countries, have also said that their vaccine might be rendered less effective against the South African strain of the virus. This is according to a study that was released on Wednesday the 17th of February. An article released by Routers said the following about the matter:

"A laboratory study suggests that the South African variant of the coronavirus may reduce antibody protection from the Pfizer Inc/BioNTech SE vaccine by two-thirds, and it is not clear if the shot will be effective against the mutation, the companies said on Wednesday."

This is shocking news to most South Africans as it seems that no vaccine manufacturer can help have an efficacy they can be confident about. This makes people wonder if these vaccine manufactures are even considering the South African variant when making these vaccines or they are just making them for variants available in more prominent countries.

It would seem that the only thing that will save South Africa is if they create their own vaccine. This will help because it will solely concentrate on the variant the country has and formulate a vaccine that will fight off this specific variant. In total, 3 vaccines have failed to get very a high efficacy against the South African vaccine and that is scary news.

People are now wondering if all these vaccines that are bought will be worth it or just a waste of South African tax payers money.

What is your take on the matter? Why do you think all these vaccines are weaker when they come to South Africa.
