Society COVID

Sout Africa Coronavirus cases has surpassed 4000 thanks to variant Omicron. Time to vaccinate.

The president of the Republic of South Africa Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa has promised a review to level one after a week should things get worse. He addressed the nation on Sunday following the discovery of the new variant Omicron.

Scientists are concerned about the new variant which seems worse than Delta and its predecessors. Omicron according to scientists mutates much faster than the previous variants.

Studies are being conducted to see if the current vaccines are able to stop Omicron. So far 90 percent of people reporting to hospitals are those who did not get the jab. This has forced the government to look in to mandatory vaccination.

Tonight a total of 42,664 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, with 4,373 new cases, which represents a 10.2% positivity rate. Sadly a further 21 COVID19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 89,843 to date.

If cases continue to rise, South Africa will find itself under level four soon.
