Ramaphosa on Marikana visit - The Citizen"/>
Greetings, South Africans. This evening, I'd want to speak with you about four issues that are critical to our battle against the Covid-19 epidemic as well as our society's and economy's recovery.
These include, first and foremost, the strengthening of our national vaccination program; second, the steps we will take to further open our economy; third, the implementation of a vaccination certificate; and, fourth, our engagements with the United Kingdom to restore travel, tourism, and commerce.
The South African Covid-19 Modelling Consortium reported a few days ago that South Africa had recovered from a third wave of Covid-19 illnesses. This wave, caused by the Delta variety, was considerably more severe than the preceding two. This third wave lasted more than 130 days, nearly two weeks longer than the previous waves.
At the height of the third wave, we were documenting around 20 000 new cases each day. The average number of new cases in the past seven days was about 1 800 each day. In addition, there has been a steady decline in Covid-19 hospitalizations and fatalities throughout all provinces.
This is wonderful news for all of us. We've been living in the shadow of the epidemic for 574 days, and we've all felt the pressure. We have faced numerous challenges, the most terrible of which has been the loss of many family, coworkers, and acquaintances due to the epidemic. We grieve for each and every one of them.
