Badnews In South Africa Amid Consideration To Permanently End Lockdown For Good

The Covid-19 pandemic is far from over and more bad news have been reported concerning South Africa's Covid-19 status amid the debate of ending the lockdown permanently.

Fewer than 4,000 new people infected with Covid-19 were recorded in South Africa as of Thursday, along with 31 deaths in the past 24 to 48 hours. This report is according to the Ministry of health and NICD [Read more].

Just yesterday, Thursday 20th of January, 2022 the Institute reports that 3,962 new cases of Covid-19 have been identified in South Africa, bringing a total of 3,572,860 laboratory-confirmed cases," the National Institute of Infectious Diseases reported.

South Africa's smallest and yet the most populous province, Gauteng, accounted for most of South Africa's new cases followed by the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

Over total of 37,484 tests have been carried out in the last 48 hours, giving a positive rate of 10.6% taking into account the number of new cases and tests conducted in South Africa.

As of Thursday, 82,098 vaccines have been administered across the country, with the most in Gauteng (26,123) and the least in the Northern Cape (1,181).

Due to the ongoing review by the Ministry of National Health (NDoH), there may be a backlog in reported deaths from Covid-19. Today, the NDoH reported 139 deaths, 31 of which occurred in the last 24 to 48 hours. This brings the total death toll to date to 93,846, the agency said.

Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours there has been an increase of 135 infected patients in public and private hospitals - the current total of patients being treated is 7,059.
