Background

For the past two months or so, the country has been under level one of the lockdown without any interruptions. This has been one of the longest periods whereby the country was under level one of the lockdown. This, however, seems to be changing as people are becoming more and more concerned about recent news surrounding the new Covid-19 variant and it seems things might change soon.

Report

It has been reported that the president of South Africa will be meeting with the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) on Saturday. At this meeting, they are going to discuss the new coronavirus variant and how it affects the lockdown. This means that this will be the single most important meeting in accordance with the lockdown.

There are high chances that a family meeting will be scheduled soon in order to give updates on what was discussed at the meeting. South Africans are not very happy at the possibility of the country moving to higher levels of the lockdown.

Opinion

It is quite evident that the next couple of days will be crucial in the fight against this pandemic. The best case scenario is that South Africa might move to level 2 of the lockdown to try and prevent the variant from causing harm. What we do not know is what kind of conditions might come with an increase in lockdown level.

Many people have voiced out how tired they are of this lockdown but it seems as long as the coronavirus is alive the country will have to undergo different levels of the lockdown. I believe that an increase in the lockdown level cannot be prevented at this point.
