OPINION: Signs of silent heart attack

A heart attack is a medical emergency. A heart attack usually occurs when a blood clot blocks blood flow to the heart. Without blood, tissue loses oxygen and dies.

A silent heart attack is a heart attack that has few, if any, symptoms or has symptoms you don't recognize as a sign of a heart attack.

You might not have chest pain or shortness of breath, which are typically associated with a heart attack.

People who have a silent heart attack might later recall that they had indigestion, the flu or a strained chest muscle.

But a silent heart attack, like any heart attack, involves blockage of blood flow to your heart and possible damage to the heart muscle.

The symptoms of heart attack are the same as those of heart attack.A silent heart attack can injure your heart just like a more obvious heart attack that doesn’t allow oxygen to get to part of your heart.

But if you don’t know you’re having a heart attack, you may not get the medical help you need to limit the damage.

A silent heart attack has been linked to a higher risk of heart failure, which is difficult to recognise if you are not aware of it.
