Today is Sunday the 16th of January 2022 , and South Africa is in the second half of the month of January . It is still the same however with the covid-19 pandemic , in the sense that people are still getting infected while some are dying from the pandemic . It is with sadness to note that the statistics that were released by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases highlighted that there had been 25 people who had died as a result of Covid-19 related illnesses in the last 24 to 48 hours . This figure was a decrease in comparison to the figure that was shared in the last set of statistics . This is a bitter sweet development for South Africa as there is greatness in noting decreases in thenumber of daily fatalities , and sadness in mourning the people who died in the last 24 to 48 hours .
The total number of people who have lost their lives since 2020 in South Africa now stands at 93364 . Even though there is mourning of the people who have succumbed to the disease in the last 24 to 48 hours , there is something to smile about regarding the number of people who have managed to recover from the pandemic . There are 3 371 004 recoveries to date from the pandemic since 2020 .
However , information at hand revealed that there were 24 399 Covid-19 tests that were conducted throughout the country . There were 2597 new cases that were detected in the whole of South Africa , and this represented a 10.6%, positivity rate . The number of active Covid-19 cases is also decreasing in the country . Information shared revealed that in South Africa , there were 94 862 active Covid-19 cases . This is reason enough for the people of South Africa to continue adhering to Covid-19 protocols .
