Africans left with bitter taste after seeing that COVID-19 is rebranding as African virus

A media house in Spain recently published an article on a certain newspaper depicting Omicron is a virus travelling from South Africa to all the other parts of the world. This left a lot of Africans, including South Africans, under the impression that the virus is slowly being rebranded as an African virus.

Amongst some of the people to call out the attempt to rebrand the virus into an African issue, was @MmusiMaimane who took to Twitter to share the image of the newspaper article and captioning it with:

This is nonsen.se. A virus that most likely came to Africa from Europe is being depicted as black and South African. The omicron response from the international community has exposed deep seated anti Africa sentiment that must be addressed.

Another account who observed a similar trend is @LateefSaka who wrote:

The-brand of COVID-19 as an African issue is happening in front of our eyes

I personally think that it is unfair for the world to shun against Africa and associate the virus specifically with us when the virus is a global pandemic affecting the whole world.
