South Africa became the first country to use the J&J vaccine

South Africa became the first country to roll out the Johnson&Johnson vaccine.

The vaccination roll out started last week Wednesday after the vaccine arrived in the country on Tuesday and the vaccination started with healthcare workers.The vaccine has also proven to be more effective than the innitial data had shown.

The first batch of 80 000 of Johnson&Johnson arrived after the Astrazeneca vaccine that was delivered from the Serum Institute of India was found to have a low efficacy against the virus 501Y.V2 variant. The vaccine was sold to the African Union.

South Africa participated in a Johnson&Johnson vaccine trial with more than 5 000 participant and no one had died during this time. Half of the participants were given a blacebo. The J&J vaccine has also proven to be effective on the new variant.

The country will be receiving another 80 000 batch of the Johnson& Johnson vaccine on Saturday.
