More than 4,500 new Covid-19 infections were reported in South Africa as of Wednesday, according to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NICD).

Just yesterday, the Institute reported 4,514 new cases of Covid-19 identified in South Africa, bringing a total of 3,590,399 laboratory-confirmed cases and this was confirmed by the NICD. Most of Tuesday's's new cases came from Gauteng (1,376), Western Cape (645) and KwaZulu-Natal (567), a continuous model of the country's most populous provinces.

In the last 24 hours, 42,686 tests were carried out, which, taking into account the number of new cases, corresponds to a positive rate of 10.6%.

Due to the ongoing review by the Ministry of National Health (NDoH), there may be a backlog in reported deaths from Covid-19. Yesterday, the NDoH reported 94 deaths, 20 of which had occurred in the past 24 to 48 hours, the agency said, and the numbers might even be more.

Hospitals in South Africa saw an increase of 183 hospital admissions. However, the NICD data reflect a continuing daily decline in the total number of patients currently enrolled.

Total number of hospitalized patients per day:

Monday: 6,387

Tuesday: 6 284

Wednesday: 6 035

South Africa has received 81,012 vaccines in the past 24 hours, mostly in Gauteng (24,265), KwaZulu-Natal (11,564) and the Western Cape (10,953).

Mpumalanga: 490

Limpopo: 472

Northwest: 388
