The latest Covid-19 update from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases showed that the province that had the highest number of new Covid-19 cases was Gauteng . The province recorded 1218 new cases , making it the province with the highest number of new cases .However , the provinces that made it into the top three in South Africa with the highest new cases were Western Cape and Kwa-Zulu Natal . Western Cape province recorded a total of 521 new cases , while Kwa-Zulu Natal had 430 new cases , making them the provinces with the second and third highest number of new Covid-19 cases .
Northern Cape and Eastern Cape provinces became the provinces that recorded the lowest and second lowest number of new cases on Friday .They had 101 as well as 156 new cases respectively . It can be noted that there are some provinces that recorded new cases that were in their hundreds . It is possible to record even lower new daily infections . It is important however to encourage community members to continue adhering to the wearing of masks always .This goes a long way towards helping restrict the spread of the pandemic .
As far as the whole of South Africa was concerned , the statistics that were shared showed that South Africa managed to conduct a total of 35 806 tests in the previous 24 hours . Out of these tests , the number of positive cases stood at 3 789 .
A positivity rate of 10.6 % was recorded as of the 28th of January 2022. The National Institute for Communicable Diseases shared information that confirmed that there were 47 deaths that were recorded in the previous 24 to 48 hours . The total number of deaths to date is now at 94 784 .
