BADNEWS In South Africa This Morning, 5 Deaths Leaves Families In STITCHES, 10M PEOPLE VACCINATED

It's so sad that despite all prevention and vaccination efforts made, National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NICD) has reported 4,227 new cases of Covid-19 in past 24 hours with over 50 families in stitches over the death of their loved one(s). This leads to a total of 3,935,761 laboratory-confirmed cases, which corresponds to a positivity rate of 15.7%.

The majority of new cases today came from Gauteng (31%), followed by the Western Cape (22%). KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 16%; Eastern Cape accounts for 11%; Free Countries accounted for 6%; Mpumalanga, Tanjung Utara and Northwest each contributed 4%; and Limpopo accounted for 1% of today's cases.

The country also recorded 50 deaths, 14 of which occurred in the last 24 to 48 hours. This raises the total number of deaths to 101,002 so far. Meanwhile, due to an ongoing review by South Africa's Department of National Health there may be a backlog in reported deaths from Covid-19, meaning the number are most likely under reported.

25,108,084 tests were conducted in the public and private sectors. There was an increase of 139 hospitalizations in the last 24 hours. Gauteng's Ministry of Health has met its goal of vaccinating more than 10 million people in the province against Covid-19.

That gave the MEC for Health, Dr. Nomatemba Mokgeti, who is known on Tuesday when a vote on his department's budget for the 2022/23 fiscal year is delivered in the state parliament.

Gauteng led the rest of the country's provinces with 10,005,136 jabs, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with more than five million shots. Nationally, nearly 50% of the population is vaccinated. A total of Rs 1.5 billion had been set aside to help fight the pandemic.

Meanwhile, I have to be quick to say that there are more people who need to be met to protect themselves and those around them. So Mzansi_Updates wants to remind everyone once again that Covid-19 is still with us and that vaccination, along with safety precautions, remains the best form of protection as we accelerate livelihood restoration efforts.
