Gauteng province already in the fourth wave, what does this mean?

As the rest of the country prepares for the looming fourth wave experts say Gauteng is already experiencing the wave.

Over the past few weeks, there has been a steady increase in the Covid-19 cases and Covid-19 related deaths across the country.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) announced the latest stats for the virus as of 1 December 2021 and they are as follows:

"Today the institute reports 8,561 new COVID-19 cases that have been identified in South Africa, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2,976,613. This increase represents a 16.5%positivity rate.

As per the National Department of Health, a further 28 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 89,871 to date."

The statistics were released 24-hours later since the 1st December and there was a dramatic increase in the cases with Gauteng still accounting for the majority.

"Today (2 December 2021) the institute reports 8,561 new COVID-19 cases that have been identified in South Africa, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2,976,613. This increase represents a 16.5%positivity rate.

As per the National Department of Health, a further 28 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 89,871 to date."

News24 reported that Dr Waasila Jassat, a public health specialist at the NICD, said hospital admissions were increasing nationally in both the private and public hospitals

What does a fourth wave mean for the country?

Unlike previous waves, there were no vaccinations available that resulted in more severe outcomes. This time there are fewer chances of cases being as high however not as good as the government would have hoped.

  • During the fourth wave, there is usually a peak in infection rates, different provinces will not have the same percentage spike.
  • Vaccinated people will be less severely affected by the disease.
  • Hospitals see more admission rates and will possibly reach capacity.
  • Covid-19 related deaths or complications will also rise. Experts believe that most of these deaths will be of unvaccinated people.
  • Stricter lockdown regulations can also be expected.
