Basil And It's Many Uses

Basil is a member of the mint family. It originated in Asia and Africa. It is a green leafy herb that contains a lot of flavour. There are many varieties of Basil.

Basil is used to season food. It is popular in meals such as pizza and pasta. It's is used to make pesto and tomato sauce. It is used in teas as well as supplements. It contains many benefits that is good for the health.

Basil that is used in cooking (Ocimum basilican) has many different varieties which include the following: Sweet Basil, Bush/Greek Basil, Thai Basil, Cinnamon Basil and Lettuce Basil.

Holy Basil also known as tulsi (O. Tenuiflorum) is used in supplements and herbal tea. It can also be used in cooking especially Thai dishes.

Few vitamins and minerals are contributed from the herb to a diet hence the small amount is used in recipes. The only nutrient provided by basil is vitamin k.

Basil is used in traditional Chinese, Ayurvedic and holistic medicine. It is used to treat bug bites and is also used to treat nausea.

Sweet Basil is beneficial in treating: memory loss, depression, stroke and high blood pressure.
