In South African prisons, incarcerated prisoners can either wear red or white overalls as part of their daily attire while they continue serving their sentences.
Now there's a reason why those 2 specific colors were chosen as part of clothing for prisoners. Well its because both of them are bright in color and can be seen clearly during the day or even at night. This helps officers be able to track prisoners fast if they attempt to escape.
Back in the days, dark colors used to he used but after officers noticed that dark colours add to prisoners advantage it they attempt to break out, they decided to switch to bright colors. There were many variations of bright colors that were tested out but ultimately, orange, yellow and white remained as the official colors of prisoners.
Another reason why bright colors were introduced was because wardens wanted to give prisoners a task they can do regularly, which is washing their overalls, this was a rehabilitation strategy to instill discipline amongst prisoners.
That's because with dark colors, prisoners didn't see the necessity of washing their overalls since they didn't show too much dirt.
After the introduction of bright overalls, the amount of prisoners trying to escape the jail cells was reduced dramatically......
