Miss SA: First Transgender Contestant

2021 marks the very first year that also marks the first transgender woman, Lehlogonolo Machaba from North West, to openly enter the Miss South Africa pageant.

Lehlogonolo Machaba has made history in the Miss South Africa pageant as she will forever be known as the first transgender woman to openly enter the competition.

Lehlogonolo is a 24-year-old from North West, who works as a model booker at Invade Models. She is also the founder of DeMollies fashion brand and holds a diploma in fashion design technology from the Tshwane University of Technology.

Machaba said that she made the decision to enter the Miss South Africa because transgender women like herself are nearly never considered for such opportunities.

She believes that if she were to win this contest, then she would be able to raise hope in a lot of little girls who walk the same path hers.

Machaba explained that it has always been her dream to represent her LGBTQIA  community at such a high level, and that this was an opportunity for her to help address the issue of queer and trans-identifying people to be seen as human instead of being brutally murdered.

“I would use this opportunity to empower every marginalised person and become a beacon of hope for young girls out there regardless of whatever they think hinders them from attaining whatever goal they have. With patience, perseverance and hard work, they can attain anything they put their minds to,” she said.

Lehlogonolo shared a message with transgender people and women at large: “Dream beyond your imagination and always prioritise your education and mental health first."
