It is really good when people create local brands, release them and also get publicly loved and embraced by locals. Creating brands obviously create jobs locally for people and also shows what a country is capable of or the kind of talent they have. Here are some South African locally designed brands which are loved by many and has also been sold overseas.


Maxhosa Brand

MAXHOSA AFRICA is a South African knitwear brand founded in 2012 by Laduma Ngxokolo. This was with desire to explore knitwear design solutions that would be suitable for amakrwala (Xhosa initiates). His initial vision was to create a modern Xhosa-inspired knitwear collection that would be suitable for this market. This brand can be worn by both male and females. The brand was also worn in Coming to America too by the cast and basketball player Dwayne Wade. Here are some of the images of the designs.


Drip footwear

The story of Drip Footwear dates back to 2003, were founder Lekau Sehoana had to make the most out of what he had, which sparked innovation and creativity. In an interview the founder from Thembisa East of Johannesburg said he had no shoes to wear when growing up, he then thought of creating shoes for himself. Today drip foot wear is a big brand in South Africa. They have even collaborated with Rapper Cassper Nyovest who released his line under the brand.


Rich Mnisi

The brand was founded by young designer and model Richard Mnisi. The brand made a lot of controversy last year when they released some of their designs because of the high cost. Some items cost R60k while their poloneck is R2k. People who were spotted wearing this brand is the American singer Beyonce and a lot of Mzansi celebs.


Khosi Nkosi

Khosi Nkosi is a fashion brand established in 2008 when the designer, Nobukhosi Nkosi won a Young Designers Competition. The brand is available exclusively through the Young Designers Emporium (YDE) a chain store in South Africa that features young South African designers. The brand has dressed Miss Universe and international celebrities like Lupita Nyong'o.
