Sad : Hundreds of dead fish are lying at a Kwazulu Natal river mouth. Here's what we know about it.

I've spent my entire childhood going to the Isipingo beach and river mouth. I've swam in the water with my family as well as fished there. Which is why the current situation being reported is so heartbreaking to me. In a group of videos posted to social media we can see hundreds of dead fish lying at the river mouth in Isipingo Kwazulu Natal. Here's what we know about it.

The videos were posted to social media site Facebook, you can watch them by clicking on the links below.

In the video we are given tours of the area and you can clearly see the fish have beached themselves. The people walking around have also reported a strong smell of sewage. In one of the videos, the person recording it claims that the fish are dying because of a lack of oxygen. However this cannot be confirmed or denied at this time.

To watch the videos click on one of these links or keep reading for my opinion on the situation.

While we are not sure what exactly is causing this, the smell of sewage does suggest that it is a man made problem. Possibly with one of the pipes transporting sewage. However what I am more interested in is the implications of this situation.

Sadly people fish and swim at this river and it makes me wonder whether any of the people who have been in it or ate fish from it recently will be negatively affected. It also make me wonder about how this issue will affect the ecosystem of the river and whether the fish population within it will ever recover.

Hopefully the municipality will fix this situation before it permanently affects the river, until than we just have to hope that it will be cleaned up and recover enough for people to resume their activities within it.
