Film industry in South Africa is one of the most competitive industries to ever exist. From actors and producers alike. For you to succeed in this industry you'd then have to grow some thick skin.
As one of the less represented places in the film industry, Botshabelo is one of the places which needs people to uplift the spirit of film. Now that seems to be history as filmmakers hailing all the way from Botshabelo are here to change the narrative.
The filmmakers recently through the help of the National Film and Video Foundation were able to film a short drama called Leshano which premiered on Showmax this past week.
In an exclusive interview with Moeketsi Mphunye, who was the co-producer of the said film, he explained what the film is about, "Leshano is about a single, unemployed mother who is in desperate need to find a job and lies about her work experience in the process of applying for a job at the municipality. When her lie is uncovered, she finds herself forced and blackmailed into joining the fraud and corruption at the municipality."
Film is one powerful medium used to pass the intended message to the intended audience. As much as most people do enjoy watching local films, it is about time writers and producers work together to come up with African stories which are a bit relatable to the current situations in South Africa.
In a chat with the co-producer of this film, Mphunye expressed his excitement and further expressed how unreal it sounds that people from small streets of Botshabelo are at last paving their way into the industry.
This is what Mphunye said, "I'm so super excited to see the environment that I grew in on Television, the house that I used to laugh with my family being on a National Platform. And lastly i'd like to thank everyone who took part in this project as we were creating jobs in association with National Film and Video Foundation and Presidential Employment Stimulus on this pandemic."
