Artists, do not argue with the producer.

Okay, let's talk about the relationship between artist and producer.

It can be a great relationship if they both respect each other. It can be a strained relationship if they are struggling for control and one is unwilling to listen to the other.

I have been in both of these situations with artists. I understand both sides of this because I've been an artist myself and know artists don't want anyone to interfere with their vision.

Now that I'm on the production side, I understand how important it is for an artist and a producer to work together on the artist's vision. It is important that producers take artists where they want to go and that they really exceed the expectations of the artists.

The producer needs to take the production to places the artist never dreamed of. What I have found that most artists do is listen to songs on the radio or on a CD and have the producer write a similar song. What I do as a producer is challenge the artist to find her own sound.

There is nothing wrong with being in tune with what is happening in today's music, but you don't have to copy it. Now, to really find your own voice, you need to listen to different types of music. Don't be that guy who only listens to hip hop because your music will be one-dimensional.

Here's a suggestion, you like movies, right? Personally, I like listening to movie soundtracks because they put you in a certain mood.

Think about that for a minute. When you write songs, you try to capture a mood or a certain flavor. If you're angry, you want your music to be, too. If you are sad, you want your music to reflect that. If you are happy, what do you want from your music?

That's right, you want your music to be happy. This is what I get from film scores. If both the artist and the producer listen to different types of music, imagine what they have to work with.

There would be no limit. Artists I can't say enough about it, make sure you find a producer who can take you to the next level. Don't work with someone just because they have ProTools or an MPC.

It doesn't matter if they have a million dollar studio, they need to know what they are doing to make your production sound like the greats. Find a producer you can fully trust with your vision.
