Lobola Negotiations are difficulty by their nature. And they can be more complicated, if two people who comes from different cultural background try to marry each other. By now, most people know that many societies across practice this custom called "Lobola". The principle is the same, although sometimes it can differ on how they practice it. In most of Matriarchal societies, men generally are the ones who are required to take out some money for the women. However, in the Patriarchal society, the situation is reversed. The custom of women paying what is generally called "damages" is dying out, because the world is moving towards being matriarchal in nature. Some intellectuals are saying this custom of Lobola should be scrapped altogether, because it no longer serving the purpose that it used to when it was initially conceived.
A Pedi man and Zulu woman who tried to tie the knot saw something that will surely test the strength of their relationship. The duo met each other at one of the most prestigious institution in the country. And they both come from relatively wealthy families. It is fairly known that most rich families have superiority complexes; so one can imagine how difficult it must be when the lobola negotiations have to take place between rich families. A Pedi man can be described as nerd, because he is the type of person who rarely attend social gatherings. The man likes to read scholarly books. And the Zulu woman also falls into that category. And that explains why they fell in love with each other when they saw each other for the first time.
Well, on Sunday, 31st January 2021, the young couple's families met each other to negotiate a settle that will tie the families for many years to come. A Pedi man by his very nature he is a cultured man. And the fact that he is from the rich family didn't stop him to be a very cultured man. However, had he knew how things will turn out, he would have opted to go straight to home affairs to sign the marriage certificate with his beautiful Zulu woman. The cultural difference between the two families made it difficult for them to negotiate. In the years gone by, people of different cultures were somewhat prohibited from marrying each other. In recent years, people don't look for culture when they marry each other: only love is the determinant.
Here is why the lobola negotiations ended in tears:
The bride's family told the family of the Pedi man that they want R100 000 and 15 live cows. The main reason why thefamily of the bride demanded so much, is because was because their daughter is a qualified Virologist.
And the family of the Pedi man told them that the requirements are quite absurd. As already alluded above, the family of the Zulu lady did not appreciate the language that was used by the Pedi's family. The two families that are come from different cultural background fought each other using strong words, one was speaking Sepedi and the other spoke isiZulu. What was said cannot be included here, because the two families used a very strong language to fight each other.
In the end, the Pedi man's family were chased by the bride family. Heavy equipment was used to chase the Pedi man's family away. And it ended in tears for the couple.
