JANUARY 23rd IS BAD FOR AFRICAN MUSIC INDUSTRY: Three gone on the same day

The president has just confirmed the passing away of one legendary singer yet to succumbed at this dire period of Covid-19. Jonas Gwangwa dies age 83. He is one of the revered Jazz artists to perform along the likes of Hugh Masekela, Sipho Gumede and Caiphus Semenya.

But there is something Mzansi has been talking about on the date of January 23. This date seems to be operating like October 13 of America, here in Southern Africa. Mzansi could be wrong but the pattern is obvious.

In 2018, Oliver Mtukuzi a Zimbabwean artist whose music was loved and cherished by South Africans passed away. Oliver Mtukuzi performed with Thomas Mafumo before the latter left Zimbabwe to self exile in US. Though not a South African artist, Oliver performed with Masekela on stage at one stage. He passed away on the 23 January 2018 at the age of 66.

Hugh Masekela has always been a South African artist. He was exiled and lived in America for many years. This was due to music and utterances he made against the apartheid regime. He performed Jazz and blues and was once married to Mariam Makeba. He died on the 23 January 2019 at the age of 78.

Today it comes as a big shock to Mzansi to lose yet another legendary artist. Jonas Gwangwa was a renowned musician whose music was relish and revered by South Africans. His music resonates with South African jubilation in events like weddings and celebrations. Jonas dies on the 23 January 2021 at at the age of 83.

What is it in this date? Maybe Mzansi and SADC should put it aside and celebrate it as Southern Africa Music day.

23 January 2022.....?
