IDOLS SA: The top 8 emerges as Dineo Ranaka guest judges

This week Dineo Ranaka graced us with her presence on the show and I will admit to being nervous when I first saw her as the choice. I didn't know if she'd be able to retain her individuality. Oftentimes when guest judges come, I notice that they want to say the right things. But Dineo didn't pull any punches and I'm grateful for that.

She was lively and energetic as she gave honest, sometimes brutal judgment onto the contestants this week. She wasn't deliberately mean about it but she did leave a critique for them to work on their singing and their energy. I like her there on the judging panel but I still don't think Somizi can be that easily replaced.

The contestants performed their hearts out tonight but their were some clear stand out performances that made even Randall agree. My personal perfomance tonight was from Karabo. She chose Fantasia's; When I see you and that is an iconic song from my childhood. Her performance did the song justice.

Another performance that was electric and charismatic was the one that closed the show, Kevin. He is such a natural to me and everything he performs, there's an energy to it that is undeniable. He already performs with such ease, his star quality is palpable. He is another one of my favourites.

What I will say about tonight's show is that the energy felt very subdued and contained. It didn't help that Unathi was apologising constantly for having a differing opinion from Randall. I think that being a judge should come with authority. She shouldn't need to be apologetic about not agreeing with him.

The Top 8 was determined by the votes of the country to be Kevin, Karabo, Daylinn, S'22kile, Berry, Bulelani, Nqobie and Sia. They decided that Monique was not going to be a part of it. She was the first one eliminated but I don't think this will be the last time we see her. I've written before about how winning idols doesnt always mean you succeed, she can still make it.

I wish her the best of luck on her singing journey.

What do you think of this weeks performances?
