Mzansi has demonstrated its devotion to the Hlomu book series by assisting Showmax's first serial, The Wife, in breaking all kinds of Showmax records after its debut last week. The Wife surpassed Uthando Lodumo's record for the most first-day views on Showmax.
The drama also broke Devilsdorp's record for the most hours seen in four days, exceeding the debut of any film or series on Showmax, including Game of Thrones, The Real Housewives of Durban, and The River. Inspired on the best-selling novel Hlomu by Dudu Busani-Dube The Wife, the 40-episode first season, depicts the tale of a journalist, Hlomu, portrayed by Skeem Saam's Mbalenhle Mavimbela, who falls in love with a cab driver, Mqhele, played by Bonko Khoza, not realizing that when you marry a guy, you marry his secrets.
The Wife topped the Twitter trending lists upon its release, and early reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. Tweeps were so ecstatic when the program eventually debuted that it instantly led the Twitter trends list and stayed there for days as fans binge-watched the first three episodes and offered nothing but positive feedback. Dudu reminded viewers in a Q&A submitted to news reporters last week that because this is a book-to-TV program adaption, people should not expect to see precisely what they read in the book series.
“It is going to be very different .There are going to be new things and new people that are introduced by the film part of it, and things that are going to be left out from the books. This is a telenovela that is inspired by the books, so it changes. It changes a lot. So look, ja, it's going to be different, but people are going to love it,” she said. Fans seem to have loved every moment of the show so far. Fans seem to have loved every moment of the show so far.
