Uthando Nes' thembu's premise has always been about showing the pitfalls and positives of a polygamous lifestyle. For most of the season it has been heavy episodes but we finally got a bit of a reprieve from the drama with a sweet moment during Mpilo's 18th birthday.
This was further cemented by her reciprocation of those feelings. It isn't something MaKhumalo needs to explain, their connection is palpable. From the first episode we got to see them together and they've been an unbeatable duo.
It really stuck out to me though that she would do something that most women fail to do seamlessly. She didn't just embrace Mpilo with her words but with her actions too. I recall many seasons back when she fought to change her last name to Mseleku, she was so diligent that it seemed like no one could stop her.
It looked like Mseleku's other wives were uncomfortable with the praises MaKhumalo was being given. I realise unity is something you work on but they looked to be downright over it as they spoke generic words to Mpilo. It goes back to step parenting being difficult for women.
I think as someone with a stepmother, I know that MaKhumalo is the exception to the rule and not the rule. I don't know what it is about women who date men with "outside children" but their treatment is often unkind. Maybe they find that you too much like your mother or perhaps you'll take undue attention away from them, but they aren't often kind.
It can't be easy to take a child that isn't yours as yours no matter how much you love someone.
