Khwinana was stabbed to death at Arcadia's Sterland Mall during a robbery in 2019.

Khwinana was a dramatist, director, and actor who was most known for his part as "Lefa" in the box office hit Matwetwe.

Lucas was found guilty of the murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and contravening the Immigration Act in February after it was then discovered that he was in the country illegally.

On Wednesday, 20 April 2022, he returned to court for what was intended to be his sentencing, but the hearing was postponed until 4 May 2022.

The proceedings began with his legal representative's shocking statement that his client was cancelling his services.

Lucas was dissatisfied with his conviction and intended to appeal it, he told the court. While he had warned his client that an appeal might be filed after sentencing, he claimed Lucas was dissatisfied and needed a new lawyer.

Lucas was told by Judge Portia Phahlane that even if he changed counsel, he had already been convicted and there was nothing anyone could do about it.

The entertainment industry lost a young talent because of the greed of someone who was not willing to work hard for what they wanted and instead chose to be a criminal and murder.

Lucas should be held accountable for his actions. Merely maintaining his innocence does not imply that he did not conduct the crime. The police and the court did not simply target him and decided to prosecute him for the heinous murder, there was a mountain of evidence that led to his conviction.
