Multichoice slams SABCs proposed TV licence billing.

Today MultiChoice has come out to slam the proposal by the SABC that DStv should be required to collect TV Licence fees as part of the SABCs reform of public broadcasting laws in South Africa.

As many of us are aware, but incase some are still in the dark. The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has put in place plans to introduce an annual household levy of R265 on the eight million households currently in its TV licence billing system. the levy will apply to all households, including those that use smartphones, tablets and computers to stream TV and radio shows. Meaning that regardless of, if you were watching SABC programming or not you will be taxed.

The proposal would mean, that this responsibility would fall to MultiChoice, which operates the largest subscription-based broadcasting service in the country – DStv. According to MultiChoice, there were lots of problems with the proposal. It labelled the solution “completely inappropriate and unfeasible” and maintained it should not be given any serious consideration.

What do you think about potentially having to pay a TV Licence levy for streaming on your Laptop, Tablet or Smartphone? , leave a comment.
