Cultural experts are not happy with one of the scene which was recently played on e.tv's Durban Gen that came as a replacement for Rhythm City.
Durban Gen is a South African show that tells different stories about the lives of health workers while at work and outside at work. Durban Gen recently has been on a storyline of a mother loosing both a husband and a son who is believed to be killed by his older brother. The storyline involved the show's characters such as DR Mbali Mthwethwa, Agatha Dlamini and Thabo Dlamini. The storyline included a scene whereby Mbali Mthwethwa was cleansed by her mother-in-law who also lost a husband after agreeing that she will marry her husband's older brother, Thabo.
However, Cultural experts are not happy about the scene whereby someone who also needs cleansing was shown performing a cleansing ceremony for DR Mbali Mthwethwa.
Cultural expert being Loyiso Ngevu speaking about that scene or episode said, "This is a distortion of culture. Someone who is still under a dark cloud cannot perform a cleansing ritual because they both need to be cleansed. In this case, the mother-in-law is also unclean and a cleansing ceremony will not be successful".
"I've always said that this play, along with many other tv productions are misleading the viewers. I watched the episode with a heavy heart because i know for a fact that this is a distortion of our african culture",DR Nomagugu Ngobese said.
"However, i understand this could be a true reflection of our society. It is highly possible that somewhere in Africa, a woman who is still mourning her husband is allowed to perform a cleansing ritual. Even if this is the case, it'd still be wrong amd we'd expect the writers to show the correct way of performing a cleansing ritual",DR Ngobese added.
Durban Gen is however not wrong in how things were shown as this can still be a lesson to many. If things go wrong going forward for Mbali, what her mother-in-law did could show that such cultural wrong things being done have consequences in the end.
