Nelisa Mchunu was born in Nanda, KwaZulu Natal, on February 2, 1992. In addition to playing a soap opera actress in the SABC1 series Uzalo, she is a model, MC, motivational speaker, and magazine writer.

Nelisa matriculated at the University of Witwatersrand shortly after high school graduation to pursue a degree in media studies (Wits). Although acting was not initially her area of academic interest, her mother thought it was a poor idea for her to major in it.
