According to many who knew him, he died a broken man.
Shai was distraught in his final days, according to his friend and colleague Botlhale Modisane, who said he sought to reach out to rapper Cassper Nyovest to personally apologize for the profanities he yelled at him and his mother in a video clip that went viral this week.
Modisane, who worked with Shai at Tshegofatso Pule Foundation, told Sunday World that despite contacting Cassper's management, a contrite Shai still wanted to meet the muso and extend an olive branch to him.
Shai had intended to explain to the artist the reasoning behind the provocative message in the video clip, according to Modisane.
Modisane said she and Shai, along with other coworkers, had marched to the Joburg High Court to protest Ntutuko Shoba's employment of Muzikayise Malepane to murder Pule, who was pregnant with his child.
Shai offered that after the march, he challenge Nyovest to a boxing match to generate money for anti-GBV organizations. Raised money for anti-GBV charities.
"As a former GBV offender, he wanted men to communicate about their problems, which is why he founded the Khuluma Ndoda Foundation." "If Cassper accepts the challenge, he stated he'll meet with him in person and explain the background of the video he shot to promote the boxing match" she claimed.
When people misunderstood the message and its theme, Modisane said he instantly apologized.
To add salt to the wound his son, KopanonShsi also posted, in a now deleted post, a message expressing his dissatisfaction and disappointment towards his father's viral video.
The first person on the scene, former Generations star Sello Maake Ka-Ncube, voiced his shock at Shai's sudden demise.
"His son summoned me to their home right away, and when I arrived, I couldn't believe what I saw. Molefe Shai is no longer with us.
"Motlogolo, as I used to affectionately refer to him, and he would react with Rakgolo, is merely a memory," he stated.
Shai will be remembered as one of the greatest actors Ka-Ncube has ever encountered, according to Ka-Ncube.
"This country has produced several excellent thespians, like Motlogolo."
His performance in the play Sophiatown stands out in my mind. It motivated me to try to compete in his league."
"His death has left a huge hole in the industry," he remarked.
