According to the education source, the minister will give clarity on Thursday 30 April. "There are protocols that need to be followed" said Mweli on the source. Also the Director-general added that the proposed dates for school reopening will be finalised on Thursday. The following are guidelines of the proposal of social distancing for schools:
🔗Physical distancing in classrooms, no more than two Lena sharing desks.
🔗Cloth face masks to be worn by all students and teachers at all times.
🔗no mass events , sports ,matches coral practices and festival permitted.
During the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education briefing, Mweli noted the proposed amended school calendar for Grade 7 and 12 as follows:
Term 2:
🔗Startfor teachers: 4 May
🔗Start for learners: 6 May
🔗End of term: 26 July
Term 3:
🔗Start: 3 August
🔗End: 23 September
Term 4:
🔗Start: 28 September
🔗End for learners: 9 December
🔗End for teachers: 11 December
The phasing in approach
In line with Health Minister Zweli Mkhize’s directive, the department of basic education has proposed a ‘phased in’ approach to schooling post-lockdown.
Note: The finalisation of all above proposals will be addressed by Motshekga during the department’s official media briefing on Thursday 30 April at 10:00.
