In this article, I am going to talk about the reasons why I think going to college is a bad idea. When I graduated from high school I was very confused about what to do next. I allowed people to convince me to go to college and I went there just to find out that it didn't feel right so I decided to drop out. I'm not saying that you shouldn't go to college if you want to but it must be your choice. Don't let anyone make that decision for you. If you like what you are doing just continue but if it doesn't feel right and you want to do something else with your life, feel free to drop out. Here are the reasons why I believe that going to college is a bad idea.
1. It could lead to binge drinking
The freedom that comes with staying on campus can lead to many students making stupid decisions. Parents are no longer there to guide them. It is almost impossible not to drink alcohol while you are in college. There are even events that encourage students to drink. College students drink way more than the working class. College can turn good kids into bad kids.
2. It's expensive
I know that there are bursaries but not everyone qualifies for that. College is very expensive and it's even worse if it's private. You also need to pay for accommodation. I just feel like it's a waste of time and money. Student loans also come with the interest you might have to pay for the rest of your life.
3. There is a lot of pressure
There is a lot of pressure both socially and academically. This is one of the reasons why many students resort to alcohol. They are trying to cope with the academic stress. This can even lead to depression for many students.
4. It doesn't guarantee you a job
Imagine studying for 4 years and paying a lot of money but remain unemployed or work a job that doesn't even require a degree. It is possible to be a packer at Shoprite with your degree. I don't mean to discourage you but this is the truth. Not every graduate is going to get a job especially here in South Africa. It might work in developed countries but not here. I know people who have degrees but still struggle to find employment.
5. It doesn't prepare you for the real world.
There is nothing practical thought in college. They don't teach you how to make money. Everything is theory. You are just forced to learn something you don't even care about. There is nothing thought in college that can be applied in the real world. College doesn't make you intelligent. Many people are magic thinkers. They think that by going to college, they will come back smarter.
6. High dropout rate
It is only very few people who make it to the final year. Most drop out because of financial situations. Some get pregnant and others get overwhelmed by academic pressure.
