EFFINGHAM SEC SCHOOL: Here is what was decided following the chaos that took place during the week

A report that was issued by Newsroom Afrika 405 highlighted that a number of pupils had been suspended at Effingham Secondary School as a result of misconduct. This was after the chaos that took place during the week outside the Durban School.

The incidents which were captured on camera saw a learner getting pointed at with a rifle. The classes were even suspended on Thursday following the clash between the learners and the law enforcement agencies .Classes will only resume on the 23rd of May 2022.A parents meeting was scheduled for Saturday the 21st of May 2022 to map the way forward .

A decision may have been taken according to how the suspended learners were perceived to have behaved , but there is need for consideration regarding why the learners decided to behave in that manner. There is a need for the KZN Department of Education to establish what may have led to the action by the learners. There should not only be consequences that were imposed on suspended learners, but ways as well of getting to the root of the problem. It is also concerning that the law enforcement agencies reportedly fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the young learners who were only trying to have their concerns heard .Everybody in South Africa has the right to demonstrate in a peaceful manner .The manner in which the security forces controlled the learners on Thursday was harsh .Some learners may have been suspended, but the Department of Education needs to step in and protect the learners.

Learners have a right to be heard by the Department, and have their concerns also addressed. It is sad though that learners have lost their learning time .The school will also have to work towards making up for the lost time.
