Studying medicine as an older student: A real life story

My journey into medical school began in March 2018 when I decided to send an application to study medicine full time at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UKZN). This was the most terrifying, academic decision I have probably made. My personal circumstances were not at all in favor of my seemingly over-ambitious goal as I was a 23-year old girl who had just given birth. Even though my situation seemed hopeless, I sent an application anyway.

Fast-forward to January 2019, received results via SMS that I have been accepted to study Medicine at UKZN. I almost fainted due to over-excitement! That marked the bittersweet journey of a 24-year old first-year medical student.

The first two years were a nightmare! I struggled to make friends because I was studying mostly with 2000's students with whom there was a complete lack of resonation. I am now doing my fourth year and things seem to be very light. I have made friends who are also my age group and they have made this journey very light. In light of all the difficulties with adapting, I have never for one second regretted my decision. I am glad I did not let fear get in the way of my dreams. The journey continues...
