As schools in Western Cape will be reopening on the 19th of January , a call has been made by Debby Schaffer to the Department of basic Education . Debbie , who is the MEC for Education in Western Cape reportedly called for the scrapping of the 1 meter social distancing in classrooms . This is for the sake of making other learners return to the classroom .In accordance with the report made by Newzroom Afrika , the Premier of the Western Cape Mr Allan Winde also shared the same sentiments .
During this past week , the Minister of Basic Education Mrs Angie Motshekga did touch on the issue . However , the Minister said that the schools in 2022 would have to continue with the rotation of classes .Vanesa Leroux , who is from Western Cape Right to Education was invited on Newzroom Afrika to share her views regarding the remarks that were made by the Education MEC . Vanessa said that the department did not care about education in that province .She alleged that the department only wanted to be known for having made something . It was added by Vanessa that if the department cared so much about accommodating all learners , they would have been dragged to court to place those learners who had not been placed in 2021 . When she was asked whether she supported the current rotation of classes , she said that the country was still under covid-19. It was stated by Vanessa that the department had to focus on building more classrooms for the learners , than to want to crowd them in small classrooms . It should be noted however , that the Covid-19 infections are not yet at the zero stage . Measures such as social distancing and wearing masks still need to be adhered to .
