Nsfas Allowance Increment| Good News For South African Students - Details

With universities and other tertiary institutions around the nation preparing to reopen soon, all eyes have been on the higher education sector to determine if it is prepared to run the 2023 academic year properly. Now, the Department has announced a significant modification. Higher education and training Minister, Dr. Blade Nzimande, announced on Tuesday at a media briefing regarding the department's readiness for the 2023 academic year that his department and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) have agreed to significantly increase the allowances for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college students.

Beginning with the 2023 academic year, TVET College students will receive a living allowance of R6,000 yearly (distributed monthly). The university and TVET college allowances have been increased by 5% in line with inflation, while the accommodation allowance has been increased by 7% and limited at R45 000 per student per year. The Minister announced that the following modifications and revisions to the eligibility requirements have been authorized for the 2023 NSFAS eligibility criteria and financial aid conditions:

Funding for TVET college students enrolled in occupational programs is limited to tuition costs for the term of the qualification.

TVET college students enrolled in an occupational qualification are only eligible for allowances if they are participating in simulated training. It must be noted, however, that students enrolled in an occupational qualification with an employment contract are not eligible for NSFAS grants.

Graduates of a TVET college will be supported for an undergraduate degree at a university independent of the benefit they would have obtained from the application of the N+ rule at a TVET college level (provided they did not exceed the TVET N+ Rule).

In addition, he indicated that Nsfas will replace the 40km distance restriction for TVET college students with a more equal 10km radius.

The Minister said, "Nsfas will also administer allowances for TVET College students with disabilities comparable to universities, and the DHET Disability Grant for TVET Colleges will also be redirected to Nsfas." Additionally, Nzimande advised students to enroll in Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges, stating that there is still room available. Please contact the institution of your choosing for admissions purposes; nonetheless, we are working diligently to guarantee that our goals expedite the expansion of our TVET sector. According to Nzimande, the perception of TVET institutions in our country is shifting as more students enroll in TVET college programs.
