The Western Cape Education Department is reported to be calling for the removal of the 1 metre social distancing in classrooms that was put in place as part of measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 infections in schools .
During the week , the Minister of Basic Education Mrs Angie Motshekga made it clear that schools would still be required to continue with the rotation of classrooms as part of measures to curb the spread of infections in schools during the 2022 academic calendar .This call was received negatively by Vanesa Leroux ( pictured above) who is from the Western Cape Right to Education . She said that the department was not aware that this initiative would affect the community members .
Vanesa said that the department was not concerned about accommodating all the learners , but that they only wanted to make a name for themselves . She went on and argued that if they wanted learners to all attend school, they would not have been dragged to court in 2021 to have thousands of learners placed in schools .When Vanesa was asked whether it was appropriate for learners to continue with the rotation of classrooms , she said that the country was still under the pandemic and that the measures at hand were appropriate .
Vanesa added that she did not understand how the department would insist on the full return of learners into the classrooms while there was still an issue of placements . She called on more schools to be built before making this call for all the learners to return to the classroom .
School learners need more learning time , but the call to entirely remove the 1 metre social distancing by the department may not work for the learners . South Africa is still under the pandemic and a smart approach to the issue needs to be taken to avoid endangering the lives of learners .
