Tensions high as pupils from Ithembelihle demonstrated days before the start of the Examinations

Tensions were high on Wednesday morning when the Ithembelihle Comprehensive school learners and some parents took to the streets and marched to the Nelson Mandela District Department of Education in New Brighton.

The concerns that were being arisen were in regard to the safety of the learners, the teachers, and the school property. It is alleged that a request was made in 2008 from the department of education to assist the school with a fence but nothing was granted. It is alleged that in March this year, a dead body was found in one of the classrooms. The school has since turned into a dumping area as alleged by the dumping of a dead body. There are reported concerns of pupils and teachers who are allegedly robbed on a regular basis.

These demonstrations by the pupils and the parents are becoming part of the way of communication. It has been more than a decade since a request was reportedly made to the department of education to address the issue of security at the school, but there is still nothing to write about to date .

The school has since been turned into a playing ground by criminals and the department is still folding its hands. Even the alleged discovery of the dead body in one of the classrooms did not move the Department of Education at all.

It is sickening that the only language that is understood by government organizations is demonstrations. Demonstrations have to be held and recorded live on television for positive responses to be given.
