Eastern Cape universities turn away 90% of applicants

The University of Fort Hare has space for 1.6% of its total number of applicants; Walter Sisulu University is able to accommodate just 1.5%, while Rhodes University can take 8%.

Nelson Mandela University has space for 6% of the university hopefuls who applied.

Walter Sisulu University received 570,000 applications for 2023. Of those, 504,000 were for first-year studies.

Some student hopefuls may have applied to several universities at the same time.

Fort Hare had 219,000 student applications while the university has space for 3,500 first-years.

Its spokesperson, JP Roodt said this was a record-breaking number of applications, rising from 38,000 in the 2022 academic year.

“This represents a 476% year-on--year increase. Of the applications for 2023, a total of 130,785 applicants had a bachelor’s pass, making them eligible to study at the institution.”

Roodt said Fort Hare would not accept any walk-in applications because of the university’s new digitalisation strategy, but it did have a late online applications system.

“We have opened applications for both undergrad and postgraduate science and agricultural programmes, and for some programmes in the management and commerce faculty.

“The applications window opened on January 21 and will close on January 27.”

Rhodes University received about 19,000 applications and could accept just 1,500 first-year students.

Spokesperson Velisile Bukula said: “At this stage, we are accepting late applications for BCom. We will reopen other faculties next week should space become available.”

Rhodes’s registration takes place on February 4 and 5.

Walter Sisulu University spokesperson Yonela Tukwayo said it could accept only 7,311 first-year students.

Applications for the year closed in October.
