Another knock-out to Zimbabwean Education

It was another knock-out to Zimbabwean Education from the Covid-19 which saw the government deciding to postpone the reopening of schools yet again . The reason for the postponement of the reopening according to the Minister of Information ,Publicity and Broadcasting Services , Mrs Monica Mutsvangwa is the surging Covid-19 infections in the country .

The cases have been on an increase for some days , and the government decided to delay the reopening yet again in order to protect learners , teachers and the non-teaching staff from getting infected .

The schools got postponed for a further two weeks . In January , the reopening was postponed because of the Second wave of infections .Some months later , as there was a third wave , the schools were slashed with a two week postponement. Just as the two week period was coming to en end , the government decided to add another two weeks. This means that the schools´ reopening has been deferred by four weeks . It is not known as well whether at the end of the next two weeks the schools will be ready for reopening or not .

The closing of schools has negative impacts on the learner . Even though the postponement is justifiable , not having face-to-face learning impacts those learners who can´t afford online learning or who do not have the means to conduct online learning.

As a result , the inequality in terms of education will have its gap further widened , with education being acquired by those who have means and the ability to be online.

On the other hand , it means that those learners who do not have the means or ability to be online will not be getting any education. The Covid-19 pandemic came with negative impact on the ecucation sector as it limited face-to-face lessons so as to limit the spread of the pandemic .

In the process , there was growth in the need to adopt the online way of learning , hence further inequality in terms of education in Zimbabwe as it can be accessed by a few , with rural learners being the most affected because of a number of reasons .
