On the opening day of schools , the Gauteng Education MEC Mr Panyaza Lesufi assured all parents that all the unplaced learners would get placed in schools . Even the Minister of Basic Education Mrs Angie Motshekga did assure parents that their children would eventually be placed in schools , as it was the department's duty to do so .
Masego Rahlaga who was at the Morningside District office said that the parents looked calm on day 2 .Masego said that there were about 700 learners who were yet to be placed in schools . Some applications may not have had the right documentation and not got processed according to Masego .
She went on and said that some parents may have relocated in the last minute , hence the need to look for new schools . Those are some parents who reportedly made it to the district education offices .Information will be made available later on regarding how many learners will still be unplaced by the end of the day (Thursday) .One parent who was spoken to seemed frustrated as she had been struggling to get a place for her son.She said that she did apply on time but got no confirmation message . She alleged that she went to the school from which she had applied , but the school referred her to the education offices .
When she reached the education offices , she alleged that she was referred back to the school , much to her frustration . She was not happy with the fact that the school and the education department were making them move up and down .
The parent also alleged that she had been forced not to go to work for two days because of the issue of placements .The school however reportedly said that it was full and could not take more children .
